THE MANAMU STORY
MANAMU: Where ancient heritage inspires modern living
MANAMU is a female-owned social enterprise, founded in 2019 by Melania Karolina. She collaborates with talented artisans from Sumba Island, in the Eastern part of Indonesia, to keep the ancient art of wire mesh weaving, or LULU AMAH alive. This is a timeless expression of love and heritage woven with the soul of Sumba. Sumbanese artisans weave metal wire threads into exquisite jewellery to symbolize not only the enduring bond between couples but also the rich cultural legacy of Sumba.
The story doesn’t end with Lulu Amah. MANAMU is deeply committed to reviving another ancient Sumbanese treasure: MAMULI. These intricately crafted ornaments, often made from gold or silver, hold profound meaning for the people of Sumba. Their distinctive omega shape, reminiscent of the female form, symbolize fertility, motherhood, and the cyclical journey of life. Mamuli is believed to possess a spiritual energy that connects the wearer with their ancestors and signifies their status and influence within the community.
Together, Lulu Amah and Mamuli represent the harmonious balance between masculine and feminine energies, essential for a life of prosperity. Lulu Amah, with its intricate woven chains, embodies masculine strength and protection, while Mamuli, with its elegant curves, symbolizes feminine power and fertility. By reviving both traditional ancient art forms, MANAMU is not only preserving Sumba’s cultural heritage but also celebrating the interconnectedness of life and the enduring spirit of the Sumbanese people.
Join us on this journey as we weave together the past, present, and the future of Sumbanese artistry.
